In the 33rd General Conference of ASAIHL 2018 Announced:
  • Thailand; the New President of ASAIHL Association;
  • 2 Ph.D. Scholarships in Persian Language and Literature for the Member Universities at ASAIHL by IAU;
  • Approval of ASAIHL’s Membership Criteria and Responsibilities Proposed by Mr. Sheikh Attar, the IAU-Vice Chancellor for International Affairs, and Chairman for New Members’ Admission Committee of ASAIHL;
In the 33rd General Conference of ASAIHL 2018 Thailand was elected as the new president of the ASAIHL.
The 33rd Association of Southeast Asian Institutes of Higher Learning-ASAIHL was held with the presence of Prof. Mohammad Mehdi Tehranchi, the President of ASAIHL and Chancellor of Islamic Azad University-IAU, Prof. Suchatvee Suwansawat, the Vice-President of ASAIHL, Prof. Ninnat Olanvoravouth, the Secretary General of ASAIHL, Board Members of ASAIHL, and other Member Universities at IAU Qazvin Branch.
At the General Conference, Prof. Suchatvee Suwansawat, the President of King Mongkut’s Institute of Technology from Thailand, was elected as the new periodical President of ASAIHL.
The Chancellor of IAU previously held the presidency position of ASAIHL since 2016 for two years.
Prof. Tehranchi provided his report as the president of ASAIHL during 2016-18. The content of the report is as follows:
“I have the pleasure for presenting the following report highlighting the major developments
and activities of ASAIHL for the period of 2016-2018.
ASAIHL Board Meetings:
 Five meetings of the ASAIHL Board were held during the years 2016-2018 as follows:
       1.   5 December 2016 in Putrajaya, Malaysia.
       2.   16 May 2017 in Makassar, Indonesia.
       3.   13 December 2017 in Sukothai, Thailand.
       4.   25 March 2018 in Tokyo, Japan.
       5 .  10 December 2018 in Qazvin, Iran.
The titles of the four conferences were:
  • “Higher Education Challenges in Shaping National Competitiveness” in Indonesia during 16-19 May 2017;
  • “Better Life Expectancy through Education, Research, and Innovation” in Sukhothai, 13-15 December 2017;
  • “Higher Education for Diversity and Global Citizenship"in Japan 26-28 March 2018;
  • “The Role of Private Universities on the Developmentof Higher Education”in Qazvin, in Iran 10-13 December 2018;
The ASAIHL Fellowships occupy an important place on our Association's agenda of activities, providing for study visit and exchange of scholars among member institutions.  
Islamic Azad University-IAU suggested the followings as the initiatives and determination to lead ASAIHL to greater prosperity and raise its global status:
  • ASAIHL Award.
  • ASAIHL Journal.
  • ASAIHL Bulletin.
  • ASAIHL Scholarship and Fellowship
  • ASAIHL Global Membership Expansion.  
*Regarding the ASAIHL scholarship, the IAU will provide two Ph.D. scholarships in Persian Language and Literature for the member universities at ASAIHL for the next academic year.
In the past two years, several scholars from member institutions have benefited from the fellowship attachments, the details of which are given below:
Dr. Zuratul Ain Abdul Hamid, School of Materials and Mineral Resources Engineering, University Sains Malaysia in Penang went to Suranaree University of Technology in Thailand to lecture on the Biopolymer for Tissue Engineering: Current and Future Trends and to lecture on the Introduction of TRIZ for Inventive Problem Solving and to conduct research on development of thermo responsive biomaterials during 25 September-6 October 2017.
Dr. Jiangping Zhou, University of Hong Kong went to King Mongkut’s University of Technology Thonburi, Thailand to lecture on Hong Kong and China’s urban/regional transport planning and policies during 15-22 July 2017.
Professor Abdul Rashid bin Abdullah of University Putra Malaysia went to visit Naresuan University Faculty of Business and Economics for lectures and joint research during 2-11 April 2018.
Asst. Prof. Dr. Vichayanan Rattanawiboonsom, Dean of Business Faculty of Naresuan University was invited to discuss academic collaboration at University Putra Malaysia 16-21 April 2018.
Prof. Dr. Bennett Yu-Hsiang Fu of National Taiwan University visited Chulalongkorn University during 1-15 August 2018 to promote joint research collaboration in Humanities between the two universities. 
Membership Applications:
Since ASAIHL has attracted several membership applications during the last two years, in the last BOD meeting in March 2018 in Japan, Mr. Sheikh Attar, the IAU-Vice Chancellor for International Affairs, was assigned as the chairman for new members’ admission committee. In this respect, Mr. Sheikh Attar has contributed to the association via gathering the ideas and commenting on the viewpoints of the committee members (Prof. Patricia B. Lagunda, President of Baliuag University, Prof. Luisa Shu-Ying Chang, Vice-President for International Affairs–NTU, Prof. Roger Frutos, University of Montpellier, and Prof. Le Tran Binh, University of Science and Technology of Hanoi). As a result the finalized draft for the membership criteria and responsibilities was discussed and approved in the yesterday’s BOD meeting. 
Fund Raising Activities:
Air Asia has agreed to provide two tickets per year for five years as per the memorandum of agreement signed on 4 December 2016.”
